May 2023 Camping and Whitewater Rafting

 On May 19-21 Troop 66 visited Hickory Run State Park, in White Haven, Pennsylvania

for a weekend of tent camping and rafting. The troop visited Pocono Whitewater Adventure for

an exciting and wet day of white water rafting in the frigid Lehigh River. Saturday morning began

with some scouts participating in the cooking merit badge cooking breakfast for each patrol,

while the other scouts made trail lunches for the boats. Following breakfast we journeyed to

Pocono Whitewater Adventure. All scouts and adults participated in white water rafting, traveling

over 12 miles over the course of 5 hours in very cold water. The rapids varied from still water all

the way up to class 3 rapids. After a brief lunch stop on the river, we completed the adventure

and returned to our camp for dinner, before a torrential downpour sent most people running to

their tent.

On April 19-21, Troop 66 visited Stokes State Forest in Sandyston, New Jersey for a weekend of tent camping and hiking. On Friday night the scouts were treated to the usual hot dogs, cookies, and cocoa cooked by the adults. After a quick breakfast on Saturday, the Troop drove to Buttermilk Falls for around a 4-mile roundtrip hike with over 1,000 feet in elevation. Halfway through the hike the older scouts embarked on a secondary overnight trip along the Appalachian Trail, where they camped for the night. The rest of the scouts hiked back and to camp to participate in scout skills, some football, and helped with dinner before calling it an early night after a campfire. On Sunday morning the older scouts hiked back to camp and met with everybody before dismissal. It was a great weekend of camping at a wonderful campsite.

Forestburg 2023

On July 16-22, Troop 66 visited Forestburg Scout Reservation, for a week of summer camp. 23 Scouts and 15 adults attended this trip. Throughout the week the scouts participated in multiple merit badge classes and also advanced in rank, with boys earning ranks from Scout all the way up to Star. One of the highlights of the week was the monkey bridge, where scouts were able to walk on a rope bridge across the lake. Another memorable event during the trip was the visit from a bear cub who seemed to enjoy our sites. While the scouts participated in merit badge classes the adults installed a plaque for the former scoutmaster Mr. Bob Shea. The troop ran a flag retirement ceremony where people were able to dedicate the flag to somebody important or somebody who passed. At the beginning of the week, it was announced that the first-year scout who showed the most scout spirit would receive ashes from the fire pit as an honor.
